We Are The Ripple: Digging Deeper To Solve The Water Crisis in Uganda
Sometimes when you DIGDeeper, it involves walking alongside others in their shoes and sharing with them what we often take for granted... Something as simple as access to clean water.
Water is life. But in Uganda, clean water is not what you get every day. Many children have to walk miles and miles just in search of dirty water that they get from ponds, stagnant water, rain harvest, and other unclean water sources. They suffer water-borne diseases like typhoid, dysentery, skin rashes, and infections causing them to miss school and even build new hospitals for those affected.

How Northern Uganda farmers are harnessing water on farms
With the continued unpredictable weather conditions in the country, a number of farmers are counting losses forcing many to abandon the trade. Northern Uganda is the most affected part of the country, which has faced prolonged dry spells, while some neighbouring lakes have seen adverse floods due to rising water levels. However, hopes are beginning to return following the completion of a number of irrigation schemes in the region.

Water Crisis in Uganda
Uganda has experienced two decades of economic growth, leading to large population movements from rural areas to informal settlements around urban centers. High population growth – nearly triple the global average – stressed the water and sanitation services that exist. 61 percent of Ugandans lack access to safe water and 75 percent do not have access to improved sanitation facilities.
At the same time, access to financial services in Uganda has improved significantly over the last decade, mostly driven by the expansion in mobile-money services. This development, along with the private sector’s interest in including clients living at the base of the economic pyramid, primed the market for expansion of micro finance services to a larger share of the population.

Joe Knopp, founder of the company Ripple and its nonprofit entity, We Are The Ripple, knew it was time to make a change. Through selling Ripple Water Bottles, their team has begun building wells in the neediest communities, hospitals, and schools across Uganda.
When we heard of the work Ripple is doing to help solve the water crisis, we knew we had to be a part of the mission.
